Drive rebar into the ground, leaving two feet above ground. Clean pole with steel wool and coat it with furniture polish. The recommended mounting height for a bluebird birdhouse is 5' to 6' off of the ground. The pictures show this birdhouse attached to a T-Post using 1" Pipe U-Bolts, but you can mount it many different ways.
Tip #1 – Use the correct size entrance hole!

By the time I started to work on the log, it had lost several pounds ofwater weight. A little bit bigger may be better, but too much bigger may not be what thebirds are searching for. They can and will use a small box if nothing else is available, but morenestlings survive if the box is bigger. A female Tree Swallow as actually killed several years ago in the box. I didn't want to split the aspen log, because I like the way the bark looksand didn't want to mark it up or have it fall off the log. I had been looking for a nice inch log, so when we found a freshfallen 10 inch aspen near our campsite two yearsago, I knew I found the right log.
What is the best wood for a birdhouse?
But some kind of a baffle, such as a 24″ section of 8″ pvc or stovepipe with a hardware cloth cover on the upper end is effective. But bar clamps can clamp to any sort of bench, and in a pinch you can hold the board securely with your knee. Note that if you already have different materials on hand, you may want to consider a different design of Bluebird House. It has an opening precisely sized for bluebirds, which helps exclude unwanted European starlings, plus it’s easy to clean out. As you’ll see in the project directions, pulling out the locking nail on one side allows the front of the house to tilt open for inspection and cleaning. This house can be made for three species of bluebirds, eastern, western and mountain, although the dimensions we give are for the eastern and western species.

It’s important to keep a close eye on the house to make sure no predators make a home there while you are hosting bluebirds. You can also report the number of birds in your house so scientists can better track them. We recommend using an automatic camera that lets you see into the house without disturbing it.
Keeping Predators Out of Your Bird Houses
I used a simple method of driving a 5 foot section of a 1/2 inch rebar about 3 1/2 feetinto the ground. I think it is a good Idea to keep the hole as small as possible, butafter watching the Tree Swallows struggle to squeeze through the 1 1/2 inch hole,I expanded and re-shaped the hole. I like the final look and function of the roof on the log box, but I didnot think it out very well before hand.
Building birdhouses for Bluebirds
For bluebirds to find your nest boxes, you may need to deploy a few proven techniques to attract them initially. The Noel guard is made of wire mesh that is folded and stapled to the front of your bluebird house. It’s suitable for stopping raccoons, cats, and hawks from reaching inside of the nest box to eat the nestlings. That’s because House Sparrows use the same nesting cavities as bluebirds. They may not look the part, but House Sparrows are EXTREMELY aggressive, and they almost ALWAYS outcompete bluebirds for available nesting sites and birdhouses.
Here you will find recommended bluebird nest box specifications aswell as 5 other styles of plans. Bluebirds start looking for nesting cavities as early as February each year, and they will use them through August for breeding. During the winter, bluebirds will often use nesting boxes for roosting.
Opening up the box may scare the juveniles prematurely out into the world! Make sure to keep accurate records of when the bluebirds hatched so you know this critical time frame. So if you live in an urban area that already has lots of House Sparrows, putting up a birdhouse for bluebirds is only going to encourage House Sparrows to nest inside.
They can be 4-sided, with a floor, 2 walls and a roof or if youhave a sheltered area, like under an eave or porch, you can just build an open platform with no walls or roof. You are essentially building an apartment complexthat consists of several units or rooms for each pair of birds. For example, cavity-nesters requiredifferent entry-hole diameters. If you’re going to mount the house on a metal T-post, part A can be 19 inches long. Then cut the angle on one end of parts A, B and C with your circular saw or jigsaw set at 27 degrees. Bluebirds tend to nest at the edge of forests or other wooded areas as well as in open country backyards.
But don't expect different pairs of bluebirds to nest closer than 125 feet fromeach other. Bluebirds and Tree Swallows don't mind nesting close to each other. Five feet seems a little close to me, but it has worked for some people. Western bluebirds will also prefer semi-open country, not so much open meadows, but scrubland with sometrees.
Place tree swallow nest boxes between bluebird houses. This invites good neighbors that will help defend against sparrows. But these bird houses also invite house sparrows, so monitor the swallow houses as well as the bluebird houses.
It’s also crucial making the appropriate size hole to exclude undesirable bird species. Each of the birdhouse plans listed below is designed to ACTUALLY attract birds to your backyard. The dimensions, engineering, and size of the entrance hole were created with each specific bird species in mind. In areas where the mountain bluebird range overlaps that of the eastern bluebird, use this nest box which will accommodate all three bluebirds. See mountain bluebirds and western bluebirds species pages for more habitat and mounting instructions. The best places for bluebird houses are reasonably open areas with scattered trees and a good distance from buildings.
